Children’s Hospital (first) is established.

(July) It is founded by Drs. Francis Brown, William Ingalls and others and located initially at 9 Rutland Square. Operated for more than 40 years by the Sisters of St. Margaret, it is the third children’s hospital in the U.S. (after those in Philadelphia and Chicago), and contains 20 beds. The hospital moves to a building (second) on Washington Street in 1870,* to Huntington Avenue (third) in 1882,* to Longwood Avenue (fourth) in 1914,* and to its current location on Longwood Avenue (fifth) in 1959.* It assumes the name Children’s Hospital Boston in 2012.
